Ever since our sons were born on February 4th, people have asked us how it feels to be a mom/dad. To be completely honest, we don't always feel like a mom and a dad! Yes, I gave birth to them, the boys look just like Andy, and they raise their eyebrows to show they recognize our voices, but sometimes it feels like the nurses and doctors are more like "parents" than we are.
Last night we came one step closer to feeling like real parents... we got to hold Tyler outside of his isolette! Because his breathing is stable and his oxygen level is pretty low, our nurse said she didn't see why we couldn't start holding him. So we scrubbed our hands extra well, put on a gown, and held our son for the first time. Andy described it very accurately as "surreal." It was amazing and heartwarming and a little strange (afterall, we've just been staring at him for 3 weeks) and something we'll always remember. Tyler made it about 15 minutes until he got too comfortable and forgot to breathe... so back to his isolette he went. The nurse said he did well for his first time and we should be able to hold him for 20 minutes every day now. Talk about a reason to get up in the morning.
Max is still receiving too much breathing support to be held, but we hope his day will come soon. Not only did the poor guy have to stay in his isolette, but he now has an IV in his head... and Karen wasn't there to make him a crown! His heart murmur has also returned, so he is back on the medication to close his PDA.
Sometimes it's one step forward, two steps back. But holding Tyler certainly felt like a pretty big step in the right direction!
He was still hooked up to all of his machines while we held him

WOW - that's the BEST feeling, isn't it? I remember holding Caden for the first time the day after I had him. It's the best feeling in the world!! I understand how you feel about the nurses and doctors being 'parents' to them. I will tell you this...ENJOY IT!!! Once the boys become stronger and continue to grow....it will get a little easier. But once they come home, girl, it's a whole different ball game. But I do know how you feel...once you start holding them, they KNOW it's mommy and daddy!! THAT'S the best feeling - EVER, even now!! You are GREAT parents already!! :0)
Great big step Bridge and Andy,Max will be anxious to held by Mom and Dad and will perk up soon. Love you all and still pulling for all four. Can't wait to make small golf clubs.
