Well it's official, Max and Tyler are potty trained!! I had been dreading it and kept putting it off, but finally took the plunge (har har) a week and a half ago. Turns out that I built it up in my head to be so much worse than it actually was. It only took about 2 days with a few accidents and they've been doing great ever since. We first bought them big boy underwear about a year ago, which was around the first time they both went in the potty. Max was always way more interested than Tyler, but neither of them were too keen on the idea in general. I put them in underwear a few times when Maisie was about 1 month old, but after cleaning up 4 accidents and a bad baby diaper in the span of 45 minutes, I decided I was nowhere near ready to conquer this task.
A few weeks ago we decided it was time to go cold turkey with potty training. We prepped Max and Tyler and told them that once their basket of diapers was empty, they would only have big boy underwear from then on. So two Sundays ago, they woke up to no diapers and we just went for it. Max caught on immediately and maybe had one accident that first day. Tyler had several accidents and didn't want anything to do with the potty at first, but by the end of the day he was doing well. In 2 weeks, they've each only had a handful of accidents and have conquered public restrooms too. They wear pull-ups at night but underwear for naptime and have been staying dry. All in all, it's been relatively painless... although Andy did have a fun trip to a public men's restroom where the boys were more interested in playing in the urinal than going potty. Ick.
In typical twin fashion, they've reversed roles a bit this week-- Tyler is Mr. Independent and can do the whole process, hand washing included, all by himself. Max always says he doesn't need to go (even when he does) and has to be encouraged a bit now. Oh well, no accidents from either of them in a week, so we'll take what we can get!
The moral of the story: sometimes being lazy and unmotivated is good. Especially when it means your almost-three-and-a-half-year-olds basically potty trained themselves :)

HURRAY!!! What a great milestone. I love the McDonald's public restroom story. I can just envision Andy taking it all with a grain of salt. You need to write that story down for future laughs.
Great job M&T!!
Love,
Nana
Way to go, boys!!! Can you teach Cooper to get interested? :)
Terrific Max & Tyler! Once again you proved that you are on your own time-table and together you can do anything! And, best of all, laughing at each other while you do it!
And, Kudos to Mom & Dad too!
Love,
Dad/Big Jim
Go Diego, Go! That made me laugh out loud Bridge. CONGRATS on this huge milestone!! I'm jealous. Alex is where M&T were a year ago - the novelty of the potty has worn off and he now refuses to use it. Oh well, this gives me hope! xoxo Kelly
What a milestone!
I'm so glad that you didn't rush into potty training...I think there is so much pressure to get kids on the toilet way before they are ready...I waited until the girls were 3 and to be honest could have waited a few weeks longer...my experience was a nightmare but it's great now that it's done!
Take care!
Terri Jo
