Tyler and Max were taken off the venilators today, which is great news! These were inserted just after the boys were born to help them breathe, but they were doing so well that the doctors removed them today... after just 3 days! They are now receiving oxygen through little tubes in their noses, but they are breathing mostly on their own. As previously mentioned, I was able to receive 3 steroid shots while I was on hospital bedrest, which is a big reason why their breathing is going well (steroids can be given after 24 weeks gestation and help the babies' lungs develop). As their breathing continues to improve, the doctors will decrease the amount of oxygen the boys receive until they are only receiving room air. The big goal is to have them completely off any breathing assistance before they go home, although it is not uncommon for preemies to be sent home with an oxygen tank.
